Terry Wahls, M.D., presenting at the Ancestral Health Symposium 2012 (AHS12).
Minding My Mitochondria
Abstract:
I have progressive Multiple Sclerosis and was confined to a tilt recline wheelchair. A professor of medicine, I studied the basic science literature about progressive brain diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Huntington's, the nutritional requirements of the brain and the Paleo Diet.
Using what I learned, I created a modified Paleo Diet to maximize the nutrition for my mitochondria, my cells and my brain. Just 9 months after this new way of eating, I was able to bicycle 18 miles. I tell my personal story as I teach the biology of what our cells need to thrive, why a structured Paleo Diet provides the most nutrition per calorie of any diets and how to eat for maximal health of our mitochondria, our cells and our brains and bodies. My clinical trial, using the Paleo Diet, has remarkably positive results.
